Anuga 2013Cas-Pak’s owner Harry Zwalue was in Cologne between the 5th and 9th October attending ANUGA – the European food and beverage trade fair which brings together ten specialist trade fairs under one roof.  The event attracted 155,000 buyers from 187 different countries.  There were 6,777 exhibitors showing off their products at the ‘international food and beverage trading hub.’

AbesBagels-PackagingIt was a quest for sharper resolution on their bagel crisp packs that led ABE’s Bagels to change packaging supplier over two years ago.  During a packaging redesign project, the combination of product photographs on the packs and a tricky yellow background created the need for more intense colour and higher definition.  This ultimately meant that ABE’s moved away from flexographic printing to gravure.

Consumer attitudes to food waste and packaging have been the focus of a report released in March this year by WRAP UK*.  The research which canvassed the opinions of more than 4000 consumers clearly shows that food purchasers don’t understand the role that packaging can play in helping to reduce food wastage – particularly once the food is tucked away in the fridge and pantry.

Replacing a steel soup can with a flexible pouch requires 97% less packaging material – and it weighs 93% less.  It’s great to see that consumers are starting to understand some of the benefits of flexible packaging.  As far as environmental benefits go – using a flexible pouch as an alternative to cans means less material used to create the packaging, less fuel needed to transport it and less landfill space require to dispose of it.
